Booking Practices

Practices for the 20th Annual GWN Dragon Boat Challenge Presented by CIBC have changed. GWN has changed its team entry fee with practices. It has been reduced to one practice and the registration fee has been reduced to reflect this change. Practices will no longer be held at Sunnyside Paddling Club. Instead, teams can book their practice at Marilyn Bell Park from September 2 - 5.

GWN will contact teams to book practices once team registration is confirmed and payment is received in full.

Hiring a Coach for Practice Sessions

GWN is pleased to provide registered teams with a list of GWN recognized coaches to help you with your practices leading up to the event. Availability, payment terms, etc., are handled directly by the Coaches. You can expect to pay between $60 and $80 per practice.  Please contact the GWN Office at 416-962-8899 or info@gwndragonboat.com

What Do Coaches Do?
A Coach is an important member of a dragon boat team.
Coaches help your team make the most of your practice time:

  • They assess team strengths and skill levels
  • They determine immediate and long-term practice goals
  • They provide hands-on instruction about paddling, starting techniques and race strategy
  • They teach your team's designated steersperson how to steer
  • They give individual attention to team members who need it

Can one person be both the coach and the steersperson?
Yes, but most coaches find it hard to provide hands-on instruction from the back of the boat. They also feel they can't make an accurate assessment of individuals from the back. All teams should choose a person from their crew to be their steersperson. Your GWN coach can assist in the training of this important position.
